LEGO, a contraction of the Danish words “leg godt,” translating to “play well,” embodies both our name and our ethos. Founded in 1932 by Ole Kirk Kristiansen, the company has traversed generations, now under the ownership of Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen, the grandson of the founder. Over its 90-year journey, it has evolved from a modest carpenter’s workshop into a global powerhouse, ranking among the world’s largest toy manufacturers.

At the heart of our enterprise lies the iconic LEGO brick, hailed as the “Toy of the Century” twice. While our products have undergone substantial refinement, the traditional LEGO brick remains our cornerstone. Introduced in its current form in 1958, its interlocking design, featuring unique tubes, unleashes boundless creative potential, igniting imaginations and inspiring endless possibilities through play.

In the early 1950s, as production quality standards heightened, the LEGO Group transitioned from purchasing molding tools in Copenhagen to establishing its own tooling department. Mold production commenced in Billund in 1953, housed within the woodworking factory at Systemvej, overseen by Ove Nielsen. Nielsen recounts being acquired alongside machinery from the Jørgen Bruun engineering works, marking the inception of LEGO’s proprietary tooling division in Billund.
